What is a
gopher?
The Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys Mazama) is a hamster-sized
burrowing mammal that eats plants and creates mounds of dirt on the ground.
Important to note that gophers eat plants, unlike moles, which eat bugs and
worms. However, both species produce similar dirt mounds and can be
found in close proximity.

The Mazama pocket gopher ( Thomomys
mazama) is a regional endemic found only in western Washington,

in Thurston and surrounding Counties. An abundant population can be
found at the Olympia Airport. Pocket gophers are typically identified
by their crescent-shaped mound formations found in grassy areas.

Why protect gophers?
The Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys Mazama) has been State listed as
threatened and has been proposed for Federal listing under the Endangered
Species Act. The Mazama pocket gopher population has declined with the
displacement of local prairie habitat by agriculture, development, tree
growth, and invasive weed invasion.
Pocket gophers play an
important role in ecological communities by altering soil structure and
chemistry, affecting plant occurrences, and serving as prey for many
predators; their burrows provide a retreat for a wide variety of other
species, including the western toad.
