Introducing

Gopher Mitigation Exchange

Gopher Mitigation Exchange provides an alternative conservation strategy

designed to recover a State-listed species in a way that stimulates economic growth.

We need your support for Agency approval of this program, see below

Protect Your Land.

  • If you or someone you know is losing property because of the Mazama pocket gopher, you need to pay close attention because we can help.

  • We are proposing a new strategy to relocate pocket gophers from your valuable land to off-site locations.

  • This would free your property from these specific land use restrictions, while creating new gopher colonies elsewhere to assist in species recovery.

Gopher Mitigation Exchange.

  • Gopher Mitigation Exchange is designed to resolve land use issues with a strategy that aims to recover the species over the long term.

  • You would be able to relocate the Mazama pocket gopher from your valuable property to property of low land use potential owned by public, private, or non-profit entities.

  • Gopher Mitigation Exchange will provide an alternative conservation strategy designed to recover a State-listed species in a way that stimulates economic growth.

  • The recovery of this species will benefit economic growth in urban centers, as this alternative conservation strategy provides economic incentives for species recovery.

How Mitigation Exchange Works.

  • Gopher Mitigation Exchange works by exchanging mitigation rights between land owners.

  • This is not mitigation banking.

  • No elaborate credit based system dictated by governmental agencies.

  • Gopher Mitigation Exchange is more like off-site mitigation where mitigation rights are exchanged between land owners.

  • It is a simple, direct, and a straight forward way to fully utilize your property, while recovering a species, ultimately eliminating the need for species protection.

Get Cash for Your Junk Land.

  • If you own land under power lines, in critical areas, or otherwise of low land use value, you can cash in on mitigation exchange.

  • This is not mitigation banking.

  • There are no Agency controlled credits.

  • This process keeps exchanges in the private sector between land owners.

  • We will match donors and recipients for a profitable exchange between interested parties.  Contact us at the information below for more details.

  • Fill out our no obligation PARTICIPATION FORM.

What is a gopher?

The Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys Mazama) is a hamster-sized burrowing mammal that eats plants and creates mounds of dirt on the ground.  Important to note that gophers eat plants, unlike moles, which eat bugs and worms.  However, both species produce similar dirt mounds and can be found in close proximity.

It is true that gophers can affect your land use options.  First, you need to know if gophers are present on your property.  If gophers are present, you should become aware of responsible land use options.

Where are gophers found?

The Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys mazama) is a regional endemic found only in western Washington, western Oregon and northern California.  In western Washington, it is known to occur in Thurston and surrounding Counties.  An abundant population can be found at the Olympia Airport.  Pocket gophers are typically identified by their crescent-shaped mound formations found in grassy areas.

Why protect gophers?

The Mazama pocket gopher (Thomomys Mazama) has been State listed as threatened and has been proposed for Federal listing under the Endangered Species Act.  The Mazama pocket gopher population has declined with the displacement of local prairie habitat by agriculture, development, tree growth, and invasive weed invasion.  Pocket gophers play an important role in ecological communities by altering soil structure and chemistry, affecting plant occurrences, and serving as prey for many predators; their burrows provide a retreat for a wide variety of other species, including the western toad.

Gophers with 600-feet

of property can limit

 Development

Help us research Thurston County 600-foot rule that may limit development within 600 feet of gophers.  Many land owners are asking how this rule affects their land use options.  We are performing an independent investigation into this mysterious regulation.  Becoming a member makes you eligible for news and information on how gophers may affect your land use plans.
